When is the best time?

Located at the southwestern tip of the archipelago of Japan, climate of Iriomote Island is nothing like that of typical Japan. And the island is blessed with subtropical weather perfectly suited for scuba diving vacation.

We can dive all year round with wet suit.

When is the best time of year to dive Iriomote Island?

The easy answer is of course that you should take advantage of any chance to visit, since each of Iriomote’s seasons is great in its own way! There is no best or worst time to dive here.

Spring(March to May)

The wind will start to blow from the south, and diving becomes available at all the areas of Iriomote Island.

The rainy season starts from the beginning of May, but the sea condition is generally calm, and perfect for diving.

Spring is the spawning season. It will increase the number of fishes. You can see young of fishes.

Because it’s an extended holiday period (Golden week), from the end of April to early May tend to become quite busy with Japanese people. Wherever you go, it’s always packed with people during Golden Week. You should avoid during the period.

Tips on diving Iriomote Island in spring

Weather We have a lot of very fine days.
Temperature 23~28℃(73~82℉)
Water temperature 24~26℃(75~78℉)
Suit Wetsuit : 5mm full suit with food vest.

The water needs a bit more time to warm up, and it is nice and cool under the water.

Summer(June to September)

Summer is the most favourable season because of the warmer waters and smaller waves.

Summers in Iriomote are very hot. And we have a spell of fine weather.

The sun is strong in Iriomote, but the cool breeze from the ocean feels good. On the boat, It is cooler than on the ground. Under the water is even better!

Generally in the summer there are more snorkelers & divers in Iriomote Island. It is very crowded here.

But it’s fun to communicate with people from all over the world!

Tips on diving Iriomote Island in summer

Weather A long spell of fine weather. You are caught in a squall. But It’s not long time and everyday. If typhoon will approach here, It will be stormy days.
Temperature 29~34℃(84~93℉)
Water temperature 27~32℃(80~89℉)
Suit Wetsuit : 5mm full suit.

You might think it is too much, but I recommend it for your safety. Wet suit keep your body warm and protect your body.

Fall(October to November)

While autumn technically begins in late September, it’s still usually quite warm (sometimes very hot) at this time of year, but with the arrival of October the fall definitively gets underway.

But by and by the bitter north wind begin to blow.

Summer is a very popular travel season in Japan. If you would like to try and avoid tourists to the extent possible, you may wish to consider fall.

Weather Cloudy and Rain. Although sunny days don’t usually last.
Temperature 25~28℃(77~82℉)
Water temperature 25~27℃(77~80℉)
Suit Wetsuit : 5mm full suit with food vest.

If you are sensitive to cold, please bring your own food or food vest.

Diving Points The seasonal north wind starts to bring some dry air to the island, and the scorching hot weather of summer will be over. The day north wind is strong, we can’t go Outside of the bay. We dive calm sandy areas. (>>Information about diving sites)

Winter(December to February)

Even Iriomote, winters are cold, with temperatures ranging from approximately 18~23℃(64~73℉).

Yes, it is cold, but if you can get past this basic fact, you’ll find that winter is in fact one of the best times to experience Iriomote Island all for yourself.

In general, you’ll find far fewer tourists visit Iriomote Island in winter.

It is the low season, and you will have much more space on the boat. You can feel relaxed than another season. If you are lucky, I might arrange private tour for you.
